Ohio State has announced a significant seven-year contract extension for head coach Ryan Day, marking a key moment in the school's football history.

The extension, which runs through the 2031 season, increases Day's annual salary to approximately $12.5 million, placing him among the highest-paid coaches in college football.

With this new deal, Day will now be the second-highest-paid head coach in the country, trailing only Georgia's Kirby Smart, who earned $13.2 million last year.

Clemson's Dabo Swinney holds the third spot with $11.1 million annually.

Day's new contract comes on the heels of his success in guiding the Buckeyes to their first national title since 2014, securing the College Football Playoff National Championship with a decisive 34-23 victory over Notre Dame.

Ohio State's athletic director, Ross Bjork, praised Day's leadership, noting his dedication to both the success of the program and the well-being of his players.

"Ryan has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of our players, both on and off the field," said Bjork.

"His leadership has maintained our position of national prominence each year."

Day's tenure at Ohio State has been marked by impressive consistency.

Over his six seasons as head coach, he has led the Buckeyes to at least 11 wins in each full season, except for 2020 when the team played just eight games due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a 70-10 record and two Big Ten titles to his name, Day's impressive winning percentage of 87.5% is among the best in college football history.

While Day has secured his long-term future at Ohio State, the program faces an offseason filled with significant transitions.

The departure of key coordinators and several star players heading to the NFL Draft will present challenges for Day and his staff.

However, with his new contract in hand, Ohio State remains confident in his ability to navigate these hurdles and continue to lead the Buckeyes to success.

Day expressed gratitude for the he has received from Ohio State's leadership and the program's players.

"My family and I are incredibly grateful to be a part of the Ohio State community," he said.
