LSU fans were left holding their breath after star guard Aneesah Morrow missed the Tigers' dominant 79-63 win over Georgia. But head coach Kim Mulkey wasted no time in delivering the news everyone wanted to hear-Morrow's injury isn't as bad as feared.
"She has no structural damage, no ligament tears, and no broken bones," Mulkey confirmed after the game. "She got stepped on in the Texas game. It was just a contusion; she's just sore." The decision to rest Morrow was purely precautionary, Mulkey explained, as LSU prepares for a brutal SEC schedule that could determine their postseason fate.
Even without Morrow, the Tigers proved they could handle adversity. Jersey Wolfenbarger and Sa'Myah Smith stepped up in a big way, both recording double-doubles.
Wolfenbarger erupted for 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Smith added 11 points and 12 boards. Meanwhile, Flau'jae Johnson led the way with 21 points and 3 steals, and Kailyn Gilbert chipped in 15 off the bench.
LSU still needs Morrow
Mulkey praised her squad's ability to rise to the occasion. "For these two guys [Sa'Myah and Jersey] to have double-doubles in her absence has to build their confidence," she said. "God works in mysterious ways."
But let's be real-LSU needs Morrow back at full strength. The junior has been a double-double machine, averaging 18.1 points and leading the nation with 14.4 rebounds per game. With three crucial SEC matchups on the horizon against No. 14 Kentucky, No. 18 Alabama, and Ole Miss, the Tigers need all hands on deck.
Mulkey knows what awaits her Tigers
Mulkey knows the road ahead won't be easy. "You can't go on the road these last three games, which are going to be unbelievably difficult... We don't have cupcakes left. We have got to play," she warned.
While LSU has proven they have the depth to win without their star, one thing is clear-when Morrow returns, the Tigers will be even more dangerous. And if she's at full strength heading into the SEC Tournament, LSU could be primed for a deep postseason run.
