Notre Dame came close to the College Football Playoff National Championship last season, but their loss to Ohio State exposed areas that still need improvement. Head coach Marcus Freeman knows that for the Fighting Irish to take the next step, they must refine their strategy and build on their strengths.

In a recent interview on Next Up with Adam Breneman, Freeman reflected on what it will take for Notre Dame to finally capture a national title. He pointed to three critical factors: enhancing talent, improving player development, and maintaining a strong team culture.

Recruiting the best talent

One of Freeman's main priorities is bringing in top-tier talent that aligns with Notre Dame's values. The Fighting Irish have consistently been among the best teams in the country, but recruiting remains a key challenge when competing against powerhouse programs like Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama.

Despite ranking No. 12 in the 2025 recruiting class and No. 11 for 2026, Freeman believes that improving talent acquisition is essential. "We have to continue to increase the best players in the country who fit in this place and who value the things we value here," he said.

Development and team-first mentality

Beyond talent, Freeman stresses the importance of player development. The coaching staff is focused on refining skills, maximizing potential, and preparing athletes for high-pressure situations. He also highlights the need to foster a team-first culture in an era where individual branding often takes priority.

"The world is me-first," Freeman said. "How do we continue to attract team-first guys?"

Notre Dame's approach goes beyond X's and O's. The coaching staff is committed to creating an environment where players grow both on and off the field, ensuring they are prepared to contribute at the highest level.

The road ahead

As Notre Dame prepares for another title run, expectations remain high. The Fighting Irish are currently ranked No. 5 in early projections for next season, trailing Texas, Ohio State, Penn State, and Georgia.

Freeman and his team are well aware of the obstacles ahead, but with a continued emphasis on talent, development, and culture, Notre Dame may finally be on the verge of bringing a championship back to South Bend.
