Shedeur Sanders strongly linked to NFL team with established QB that's drafting much lower than expected

The Colorado Buffaloes quarterback's draft stock appears to be slipping.

With the 2025 NFL Draft a couple of weeks away, the big picture is starting to get slightly clearer. Everything is now pointing to Cam Ward being the first player taken, most likely by the Tennessee Titans at No. 1. Steam is gathering for Travis Hunter to be the No. 2 pick right after Ward. Then come the New York Giants, who hold the key to the rest of the Top 10.

Almost everyone expected them to draft a quarterback, but their gs of Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson threw that plan for a loop. While they would still take a long, hard look at Shedeur Sanders, it's starting to look like Abdul Carter will by the pick at third overall. That begs the question: How far will Sanders fall?

Are the New Orleans Saints the new favorite to draft Shedeur Sanders?

Legendary draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. released his newest mock draft on Tuesday, and he has Sanders falling all the way to No. 9, where the New Orleans Saints scoop him up as Derek Carr's successor.

If Sanders doesn't go to the Giants, there aren't many clear landing spots for him in the top 10 ... and he could slide. I could see a team trading up for him -- maybe even the Saints, who have nine picks -- but most of these rosters are already set at quarterback. This is a great outcome for New Orleans, though. I like this match a lot.

Kiper isn't the only draft analyst who has that same move playing out. NFL.com's Rhett Lewis has the exact same scenario in his latest mock, which was published on the same day as Kiper's.

There's definitely been some smoke regarding the Saints taking a quarterback in this draft. In this simulation, the second-best signal-caller in the class falls right into their lap at No. 9. At some point, New Orleans has to start planning for the future; snagging a talented prospect with a reasonable price tag at the league's most position could be a coup.

Carr is under contract with the Saints for the next two seasons, but he hasn't lived up to his lofty salary through two seasons in New Orleans. The franchise is essentially in rebuilding mode, and Carr doesn't exactly fit the bill at 34 years old.

Sanders would be able to learn behind Carr until he's ready, or even take over as soon as Carr fully implodes or is traded away.
