Sonia Citron has been a standout guard for Notre Dame in the NCAA this year but her career actually began at The Ursuline School.
She was a senior in 2021 and helped the Koalas to a 14-0 unbeaten season. She got 26.5 points, 11.2 rebounds and numerous assists per game.
That year, she earned a host of honors, including Gatorade New York Player of the Year, McDonald's All-American, Section I Miss Basketball, and MaxPreps New York High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Citron ed Notre Dame in 2022, continuing a journey marked by elite performance and family .
Sonia's parents are Yolanda and William Citron, and they have played a huge role in her development as a player.
USA Basketball reports that William played college basketball at Bradley University and his love for the game meant that Sonia was always going to be encouraged in that direction.
She started to play basketball in second grade and has never looked back, working through the age groups with the of her parents.
Sonia shines at Notre Dame
Sonia's rise at Notre Dame began in 2022. As a freshman, she became one of only two first-year players nationwide to average at least 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
In her sophomore campaign, she elevated her game, posting 14.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest. She earned first-team All-ACC honors, was again named to the All-ACC Academic Team, and was recognized as Notre Dame's Defensive Player of the Year.
Her older brother, Will, played a significant role too. Will, a soccer player at Cornell, helped instill a competitive spirit in her.
"We're both super competitive," he its. "I'd never go easy on her. Now it's crazy to see her having these amazing games and even beating me sometimes!"
