Travis Hunter was a one-of-a-kind athlete who captivated the world during his time with the Colorado Buffaloes. As the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, he left an indelible mark on college football. Now, just days before his NFL destination is revealed, a new talent has emerged, potentially capable of replicating Hunter's remarkable two-way collegiate success.

Could this be the rise of Travis Hunter 2.0?

Hunter outshone competitors like Ashton Jeanty to claim the Heisman, but another player is now drawing comparisons for mirroring his dual-role brilliance as both a defensive back and a receiver. At Boise State, the Broncos are in the final stages of spring practice, and safety Ty Benefield has been turning heads with his versatility. Last season, Benefield led the team with 82 tackles and two interceptions. This spring, he's taken on a new challenge, stepping in as a wide receiver.

"We ran a couple of offensive plays for him recently because he's that kind of dynamic football player," said head coach Spencer Danielson. "With some receivers sidelined, we told Ty, 'Go out there and catch a few es.' He's just that guy for us."

Danielson added, "Will this become a regular role? We're still exploring that. But Ty Benefield is a leader on this team. He loves this program, and in our last scrimmage, he elevated his game to a level I hadn't seen before. It's exciting to watch him grow."

As a freshman, Benefield appeared in five games before establishing himself as a standout safety in the Mountain West Conference last season. Beyond his tackles and interceptions, he also broke up three es and recovered two fumbles.

With receivers Latrell Caples, Chris Marshall, and Austin Bolt nursing injuries, Benefield has seized the opportunity to shine on offense. Danielson challenged him to embrace the dual role, and Benefield didn't hesitate.

"I know what kind of athlete he is," Danielson said. "I saw him do it in high school. Spring ball is the time to test guys in new situations, and Ty made a huge catch during Thursday's practice."

"Ty is an elite competitor who lives for football," Danielson continued. "Everything he does is about becoming the best version of himself. Even as a sophomore last year, he handled a lot of responsibility as a safety and executed brilliantly. Now, through spring ball, he's taking his game to another level."
