The 2025 NFL Draft didn't play out how Coach Prime envisioned it for his son.

It seems crazy that a fifth round pick is talked about so much, but easily the biggest storyline of last week's 2025 NFL Draft was Shedeur Sanders' epic fall from grace. Once considered a legit contender to be the first overall pick, the former Colorado quarterback ended up being the 144th player taken in the draft. Some say that it was a humbling of sorts from NFL franchises who felt that Shedeur and his father, Deion Sanders, thought they deserved it all.

Since the slide happened, Deion has been under criticism more than usual. There have been several analysts who opine that Coach Prime hyped up his son to a point that was never realistic. Deion's past comments have painted an unflattering picture, too. In particular, Deion's comments about the Cleveland Browns franchise, who took Shedeur, have come back to haunt him.

Deion Sanders doesn't seem to like Cleveland very much

While many focused on his comments from several years ago, there was a moment recently where Deion seemed to slight Cleveland when discussing possible landing spots for Shedeur Sanders. He clearly preferred New York to Cleveland.

I can't manipulate the draft. Yes, I can. I can't tell them where they're going to go, really. I'm happy, whatever city they're chosen... What did you say? "Cleveland". [Sanders laughs]. We're praying for the Giants right now. Yes, we are. It's gonna be interesting, though.

This interview came a few weeks before the draft. So even with the draft nearing, Deion still felt that he could manipulate the draft. He had mentioned that Travis Hunter and Shedeur wouldn't just accept being drafted by any team. That notion quickly disintegrated once he saw Sanders' slide taking place.

Some fans wondered if Deion and Shedeur would prefer not being drafted, so he could pick and choose where to sign as an undrafted free agent. Ultimately, the Browns pulled the trigger in the fifth round as they look to find a long-term quarterback solution through various means.

Browns fans will surely be aware of Deion's comments as Shedeur begins his NFL career. In order to avoid potential booing and to get the fans behind Shedeur, Deion would do well to try to mend the relationship in any way. It could benefit Shedeur in the long haul.
