- Soccer. Carli Lloyd Confirms shocking defeat to Under-15 boys as vital stepping stone to World Cup glory
Two-time FIFA Women's World Cup winning soccer star, Carli Lloyd, revealed she was offered a chance to play for the Philadelphia Eagles after nailing a 55-yard field goal attempt during one of the team's training camps.
Lloyd is a legendary United States Women's National Team icon but almost traded that in for a shot in the NFL, although she didn't go on to become the first woman to play in the league.
"It was getting pretty serious with a couple of teams," Lloyd revealed to Up and Adams. "I could have done it, but things worked out the way they were supposed to."
Lloyd said her revelation of the offer was, "Just to show young girls and women around the world that anything is possible."
The 42-year-old would have played as a kicker, who attempts to score points by kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts from various distances. Successful field goals are worth three points.
They also have the chance to add an extra point after a touchdown if they successfully kick from the 15-yard line and they start the game again after scoring, or at the start of the second and fourth quarters by kicking the ball from their own 35-yard line.
It could have worked for Lloyd as kickers are very rarely involved in physical with other players, which only happens under certain circumstances such as if a returning player manages to break the defensive line.
The most common example is if a player seeks to block a kick, which can see when they charge the ball down although this doesn't happen particularly often itself either.
When is the NFL back?
The 2024 NFL season kicks off with a blockbuster clash between the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson on Thursday Night Football on September 5.
The rematch of the AFC Conference Championship game will take place at the Arrowhead Stadium and will start at 20:20 ET/17:20 PT and will be streamed live by NBC.
