Caleb Williams' debut season in the NFL continues to unravel despite a strong start. The number one draft pick sparked excitement aplenty in his early days with the Chicago Bears, but things have since taken a turn for the worst.

The Bears have now lost three on the bounce to fall to 4-5, most recently losing to a New England Patriots team that is likely to have one of the worst records in the NFL when all said and done.

Having scored only 12 points in their last two games and only 27 in their last three, something had to change for the Bears, and with Matt Eberflus determined to keep his job, he has fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.

But in a surprise revelation after the fact, it has been reported that some of the Bears' veteran players had pushed for Williams to be benched ahead of the firing of Waldron.

Unsportsmanlike Radio tweeted: "When you have Caleb Williams' teammates going to coaches saying he shouldn't be playing anymore, there's only one way to interpret that...Tyson Bagent in at QB? Might be alarming if you're a Bears fan."

Williams threw for just 120 yards against the Patriots, making just 16 of his 30 es and failing to score a touchdown. Such bumps in the road aren't unprecedented for rookies, far from it, but expectations are raised for Williams due to the fact he is a number one pick, and indeed due to his early-season performances.

Williams to remain the starter

When asked if Williams will remain the starter going forward, Eberflus said: "Caleb is our starter."

Williams himself added after the Patriots defeat: "Definitely this game is a lot to learn from for myself, just speaking on some of the situational things.

"Obviously, there's a few es every game that you wish you could have back and things like that. But I think situationally, this game was a great learning experience for me with some of these situations that I could have done better for sure."
