The Cleveland Browns ended up being the team that stole the spotlight in the recent NFL Draft by selecting two quarterbacks. One was Dillon Gabriel from the Oregon Ducks in the third round, and the bombshell news was the selection of the controversial quarterback from the Colorado Buffaloes, Shedeur Sanders.
The Browns selected Shedeur Sanders with pick number 144. According to reports earlier this year, the team had been a candidate to draft Sanders in the first round. However, the quarterback's stock gradually dropped - possibly due to media pressure - and he ultimately fell to the fifth round. Only time will tell whether teams were right or wrong to on Deion Sanders' son.
Now, Shedeur s a team where he won't arrive as a star, since he wasn't a first-round pick. He'll first have to fight to stay on the roster and then compete for the starting position against Deshaun Watson (injured), Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Spring practices are expected to be intense.
Shedeur will have his chance to compete for the starting role
According to reports from various Cleveland media outlets, Shedeur will have a "legitimate chance to be the starting quarterback for the Browns in the first regular season game in September."
Several NFL scouts believe Sanders is the most talented quarterback among those currently available to the Browns. However, he will need to prove he can grasp an NFL playbook.
This was one of the main concerns that led NFL teams to on Sanders. It was leaked that the New York Giants and their head coach, Brian Daboll, set traps for him in a playbook test - and Shedeur Sanders was unable to decipher them. That was reportedly one of the reasons the Giants chose Jaxson Dart instead.
It wasn't just the Giants - teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints, who were at one point projected to pick Sanders, also ultimately ed on him.
Now with the Browns, Sanders will have to showcase all his talent. It will be seen in training camp whether he has what it takes to be Cleveland's starter in Week 1.
