- NFL. Encouraging projection puts Dillon Gabriel over Shedeur Sanders in his rookie season
Cleveland Browns kicked off rookie camp and the preseason with a big challenge. Despite the ing of the days, they still have not decided which of the five players they have will be the team's QB1.
With Deshaun Watson still recovering from his Achilles injury, veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett could be their safest option, feet already know.
However, this year two newcomers made the team thanks to the NFL Draft: Dillon Gabriel, selection 94, and Shedeur Sanders at 144.
Although Cleveland has not yet announced its official QB1, if the team decides to give the younger players a chance, the competition for the job will be in the hands of newcomers Gabriel and Sanders.
Despite this hasty conclusion, one Cleveland Browns legend believes that neither Sanders nor Gabriel should take this spot.
Speaking on "Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show," Bernie Kosar, who shined for the team from 1985 to 1993, has expressed his opinion on the situation:
The rookies, I think it's absolutely best, even if you're God, to not play right away, especially on a rough team. We haven't developed a quarterback since 1999, since the team's comeback.
His words are not without reason, given that the fight between Sanders and Gabriel for the job has been the talk of the town, even though there are no official confirmations from the team.
In the same vein, Kosar advised both to be patient and cautious: "I'd like to see, for their own development, some time off. It helped me. I believe it'll help those guys have a better chance of success. It doesn't look like this is going to be the Super Bowl champion team this year," he said and opened a debate: the focus needs to change if we don't want to have overloaded players who can't deliver the expected results.
Rookie numbers
On the one hand, the former Oregon led the Ducks to a flawless 13-0 season, reaching the Rose Bowl and finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting last season, throwing for 3,857 yards and 30 touchdowns. He was also picked well ahead of Shedeur during the Draft.
However, Sanders was ranked No. 8 for the Heisman Trophy, and produced 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns as he and Travis Hunter inspired the Colorado Buffaloes to the Alamo Bowl.
