The clock is ticking for the Dallas Cowboys in the Dak Prescott saga. With training camps rapidly approaching, the team still cannot guarantee the return of its star quarterback. Despite this uncertainty, executive vice president Stephen Jones expressed confidence that they will reach an agreement sooner or later.

Prescott is entering the final year of his most recent contract with the Cowboys. The quarterback signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension in 2021, and at the end of the 2024 season, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

One of the major challenges for Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys, is that Prescott's representatives managed to negotiate a no-tag clause in his contract. Thus, there is very little the team could do to retain the player if he wanted to leave.

Negotiations have continued for months without the parties reaching an agreement. In this regard, Stephen Jones tried to reassure the team's fans, saying that it will take time, but "we think we can get this done."

Cowboys management confident

In an interview with the "Scoop City" podcast, Jones said that when it comes to deals as big as the one they are seeking with Prescott, things take time. "When you start stacking them up like that, you know, it's a challenge," itted the Cowboys vice president.

He explained, "It's not that it's not doable, but you certainly got to have some give and take if you want to do that." He gave as an example the recent four-year, $140 million contract the Minnesota Vikings signed with wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

"I know the Vikings were there with Jefferson when they made that inordinate deal at the receiver spot. You know, they don't have one player on their team other than Jefferson making over $20 million," Jones recalled.

However, the Texas team has other concerns besides Prescott. "And, of course, we've got a big one in Dak. And we got Trevon Diggs right there. And then you got Zack Martin and DeMarcus Lawrence. And so we got a lot of guys making quite a bit of money," Jones explained.

The Contract with Prescott will take time

Insiders from various media sources assure that Prescott is asking for an agreement that guarantees him $60 million per season. With all the negotiations they have in store for next year, the franchise has little room for maneuver under the salary cap.

Despite everything, Stephen Jones assured that they are not making excuses and reiterated that they are still working on the deal with their star signal-caller. "We think we can get this done, we know we can get it done. But it just takes time."

Time marches on. Dallas continues to do the math, while Prescott deals with the aftermath of some injuries. Only time will tell if we will see the nine-year veteran once again don the blue and silver of the Cowboys or if he will change colors in 2025.
