Zack Martin's season-ending ankle surgery is a significant blow for the Dallas Cowboys, but his impact on the team-and beyond-remains undeniable. The 34-year-old guard, considered one of the best of his generation, has been a cornerstone of the Cowboys' offensive line since being drafted in the first round in 2014. Known for his toughness, Martin had missed only 11 games in 11 seasons before this year.
Now sidelined by injuries to both ankles and a shoulder, Martin faces an uncertain future. Retirement is on the table, though this certainly isn't how he envisioned the end of his illustrious career.
"He's gonna be missed," said Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. "We're not gonna replace Zack Martin, by any means. He brings so much to the team and the culture. People gravitate to him. His leadership, he'll definitely be missed." The Cowboys, relying on Brock Hoffman and TJ Bass as replacements, will struggle to replicate Martin's presence. His leadership and All-Pro talent leave shoes that McCarthy its are "un-fillable."
Martin's injury ends season early, but his legacy lives on
Despite the setback, Martin's influence extends far beyond the field. He was recently named the Cowboys' nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, an honor recognizing excellence on and off the field. This nomination highlights Martin's commitment to his community, particularly through his involvement with the National Medal of Honor Museum. For years, Martin has worked to raise awareness for Medal of Honor recipients, a cause he's championed with his teammates as part of the NFL's "My Cause My Cleats" initiative.
Martin's philanthropy doesn't stop there. His partnership with The Salvation Army has become a tradition, with Martin and his family participating in efforts like distributing Thanksgiving meals, providing Christmas gifts through the Angel Tree program, and visiting local children's hospitals. "Zack's dedication to serving others is just as powerful as his contributions on the field," said a Cowboys spokesperson. His impact is felt not just by teammates but by the community at large.
The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winner will be announced on February 8 during NFL Honors. The winner will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of their choice, while all 32 nominees receive up to $55,000. If Martin wins, he will Cowboys legends Dak Prescott, Jason Witten, Troy Aikman, and Roger Staubach in receiving the award.
