When everything seems to be calm with the Dallas Cowboys after they finally announced Mike McCarthy's replacement on Friday afternoon with the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer, the mood of the fans and critics of the Lone Star team's poor season was exacerbated and questions began to arise, both to the new head coach and to Jerry Jones, about how this process came about.
Jones, the franchise owner, said in recent days that he had interviewed a new applicant, an additional element of the plot that excited Cowboys fans, coach Pete Carroll, who was eventually hired by the Las Vegas Raiders, news that enraged fans of the star.
Bayless' angry claim to Jones
One of the most critical voices was that of Cowboys analyst and fan Skip Bayless, who on the X of his show 'The Skip Bayless Show' laid into the team's owner, calling him a liar: "Jerry Jones is shrewd. He knows how to play that public relations game. So now he has leaked the news that he talked to Pete Carroll. He didn't call him in for an interview. He talked to Pete Carroll just so he could tell everybody after hiring Brian Schottenheimer, well, 'I talked to old Pete, but we really didn't come to any conclusion about anything.' Enough. Jerry, I've heard enough," he told Jones vehemently.
Why Jones didn't interview Carroll, according to Bayless
Jones would have only done three interviews officially, in addition to Schottenheimer's, one with the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, another with Seattle Seahawks assistant Leslie Frazer, and one more with former NY Jets head coach Robert Saleh; something that the fans criticized him for not taking to that point neither Deion Sanders nor Pete Carroll, something that Jones claimed did happen and that Bayless unmasked.

Bayless claims that Jones did not interview Carroll because he would have questioned and blamed him for the Cowboys' poor performance in the season that just ended: "He's too charismatic for you, Jerry. You couldn't run over Pete Carroll, you couldn't tell him what to do. You couldn't order him around. You couldn't demand him. He would take over your franchise. And then, when he won, and I think he would win very quickly, he would get almost all the credit, maybe not Deion's (Sanders) credit, but almost all the credit would go to Pete Carroll," he concluded.
