The Dallas Cowboys have commissioned Dak Prescott to begin training the next generation as the quarterback takes Joe Milton under his wing under the orders of their head coach, after a disheartening 2024 campaign.
Jerry Jones' team missed the cut for the NFL Playoffs behind the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders and subsequently Mike McCarthy was fired and replaced by Brian Schottenheimer.
The offense struggled throughout the season, although Prescott could only be held able until Week 9 before his season came to a premature end following a hamstring issue that required surgery.
Replaced by Cooper Rush and Trey Lance on a stand-in basis, the season quickly slipped away from the team and they ultimately went on to finish with a 7-10 record (.412) and seven wins behind the Eagles, who went on to become Super Bowl champions to add an even bitter note.
Now as the team returns for OTAs as preparation for 2025/26 begins to build-up, Prescott finds himself taking on a unique role by becoming a teacher to Milton and Will Grier.
"Watching Dak take a mentorship role has been fantastic," Schottenheimer said to reporters. "The talent's there - Joe's got a bright future.
""I was excited about Joe before we got him. The work ethic is incredible. He's one of the first in the building...last to leave. The way he's attacked the playbook and picked it up has been incredible."
Milton was acquired in an April trade with the New England Patriots, and gained attention in a standout performance against the Buffalo Bills in Week 18 of the 2024/25 season, where he completed 22-of-29 es for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
The 25-year-old played at collegiate level for the Michigan Wolverines and Tennesse Volunteers, and ended his NCAA career with a combined 4303 ing yards for 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions through 21 starts (43 games).
Prescott almost 100% for NFL season
However, Dallas fans needn't worry about their star quarterback being distracted, however, as he remains focused on ensuring his eye is dialled in when it comes to taking snaps and calling plays behind the offensive line.
With the season on the horizon, optimism is cautiously returning to the Cowboys and Prescott says he's almost back to 100 percent form as the team prepares to take the fight to the Commanders and Eagles.
"I feel great," Prescott told reporters. "I can do nearly everything everyone else is doing at this time of the offseason.
"Just not cleared for -got a while for that anyway. Yeah, feeling great."
The team opens their campaign with a visit to the Lincoln Financial Field to take on the Eagles on September 4 in the NFL Kick Off Game. The start time will be 20:20 ET/17:20 PT, live on NBC and Peacock.
