April 26, 2025, will forever be a milestone date for Ahmed Hassanein.
Not only did the Detroit Lions select him in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, making him the first Egyptian native ever drafted into the league, but he also used the moment to take a major personal leap: proposing to his girlfriend immediately after getting the call.
Ahmed Hassanein's unbelievable path to the NFL
Hassanein's journey to the NFL is one of perseverance and rapid growth.
Born in California, he moved to Egypt as a young child, returning to the U.S. as a teenager.
He didn't learn English until his late teens and only discovered American football at 16.
Still, he adapted quickly, becoming a standout at Loara High School and then at Boise State, where he became a captain and first-team All-Conference defensive end.
Chosen by the Lions with the 196th overall pick, Hassanein wasted no time making his emotions known.
During his call with Detroit head coach Dan Campbell, the rookie's ion came through loud and clear. "I'll die for you, coach,"Hassanein said.
"I will die on that field for you. I promise I would."
That emotional promise captured the attention of NFL fans, with a clip of the call garnering more than 350,000 views on social media.
Yet, for Hassanein, the moment was even bigger than football.
After hanging up with Campbell and the Lions front office, Hassanein dropped to one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, turning a day of professional triumph into a personal milestone as well.
Hassanein's story extends beyond just his draft selection and engagement.
After leading the Mountain West in sacks during his time at Boise State, he now s a Lions defensive line anchored by Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport.
While Hassanein is expected to start his NFL career competing for a depth role, coaches and teammates believe his relentless work ethic and ion could see him rise quickly through the ranks.
Those who know him best believe his journey is only beginning.
"There are so many things about his life that make it an amazing story," Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson said.
But, oh man, he's gonna get drafted because he's gonna have a monster impact on the field in the NFL."
With a historic draft, a heartfelt proposal, and a promising NFL future ahead, Hassanein's next chapter is just getting started.
