Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has previously expressed his clear desire to bolster the quarterback roster. He believes it is essential to have a reliable and valuable backup on the roster and to generate competition that drives each player to improve.
"Every year it's important to spend a lot of time with these players, identify them," Gutekunst said at the Scouting Combine. "It's a tough position to succeed in this league."
Green Bay looks for QB looking to the future
Malik Willis will enter the final year of his rookie contract this year, and it was reasonable to expect Green Bay to draft a potential long-term backup for Jordan Love in the 2025 Draft. However, the Packers decided not to select a quarterback. Instead, they are exploring undrafted options and reportedly have found a prospect they like.
According to Dave Taylor, the Packers are expected to offer a contract to former Wilfrid Laurier quarterback, Taylor Elgersma.
Green Bay visited Elgersma before the draft, who impressed last season by completing 73.8% of his es for 4,252 yards, 35 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with the Golden Hawks. His impressive performance led him to be invited to the 2025 Senior Bowl, making him the second player in U Sports history to receive this prestigious honor.
"We worked out with our test guys and he has a very nimble arm," LaFleur said of Elgersma. "You could see it on tape. He played in the Senior Bowl, and Jason Vrable, ing game coordinator, saw him there. I watched the Senior Bowl tapes and talked to Vrable about it."
"We invited him for a 30-minute visit, so we had the opportunity to talk to him, another guy who loves football," he said. "Seeing him throw, he has a powerful arm, so there are a lot of things I like about him."
Jordan Love and Malik Willis have secured spots on the final roster. However, an interesting battle could emerge between Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma for the third spot. Still, it is most likely that Green Bay will only have two ers on the season, with Elgersma or Clifford as emergency backups.
