Travis Hunter, the Jacksonville Jaguars' second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has been lauded for his exceptional two-way abilities as both a cornerback and wide receiver.
However, questions are emerging regarding his role as a wide receiver in the NFL. Upon selecting Hunter, the Jaguars expressed intentions to utilize him on both offense and defense.
Head coach Liam Coen stated that Hunter would "primarily play on offense" while also practicing on the defensive side during the offseason program. Coen emphasized the need for flexibility, noting, "We have to be fluid throughout this process."
Concerns about Hunter's durability
Despite his college success, some analysts question the feasibility of Hunter excelling as a two-way player in the NFL. Former NFL linebacker LaVar Arrington expressed skepticism, stating that Hunter would not be a "true two-way player" unless coached by someone like Deion Sanders.
Arrington added, "It would take a perfect storm," and cautioned against spreading Hunter too thin across positions.
NFL analyst Ryan Wilson also raised concerns about Hunter's durability, noting that wide receivers are more prone to injuries due to the nature of the position.
Wilson remarked, "You talk to scouts; you talk to him over the summer, and they felt cornerback was his position for the future, partly because he's gotten hurt playing wide receiver."
Evaluating Hunter's role
Hunter's college statistics are impressive, with 92 receptions, 1,152 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns, along with 31 tackles, four interceptions, and 15 es defended.
However, transitioning to the NFL presents new challenges. Analysts suggest that Hunter may be better suited for a role as a wide receiver in specific packages, rather than as a full-time starter. Chad Forbes of NFL Bites commented that Hunter might be more effective as a slot receiver, stating, "You might have to play him a lot in the slot."
