During the offseason, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Dallas on March 30, resulting in injuries but thankfully no fatalities. Following the incident, Rice was charged with eight felony counts upon being found guilty.
The Washington Post has reported that a league spokesperson provided an update on Rice's status. Despite the seriousness of the charges, the wide receiver is not expected to be placed on the commissioner's exempt list.
"We continue to closely monitor all developments in the matter which remains under review," the spokesperson said. "We will let the legal process play out before making any decisions."
Potential suspension
This news likely brought some relief to Rice and the Chiefs, but it has sparked outrage among NFL fans. Many are criticizing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for the decision, believing it falls short of what the situation warrants.
"#Chiefs catching another break from the NFL like always," a fans wrote.
Another added: "Wow getting off the hook that easily. NFL really helping the Chiefs."
While a suspension seems possible, the NFL is delaying any action until the legal process is complete, which could take several months. According to reports, the legal proceedings might begin later this year, or potentially be delayed until next year. For now, Rice remains active on the field.
Rice's numbers
Rice has become a key player for the Chiefs, particularly after a stellar rookie season where he emerged as one of Patrick Mahomes' top targets.
He ranked fourth among all wide receivers in open-target rate (93.1%), showing his importance to Kansas City's offense. Even with the arrival of new wide receivers like Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy, Rice's role in the lineup remains secure.
Rice led the Chiefs in receiving yards and touchdowns, closing his rookie year with 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns during the regular season.
