As Patrick Mahomes continues to etch his name into NFL history, the debate over whether he can eventually dethrone Tom Brady as the greatest of all time is picking up steam again.
But for some, the answer is already a firm no. According to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, the conversation is closed-and Mahomes doesn't stand a chance, no matter how many rings he racks up.
Following the Chiefs' failed Super Bowl three-peat bid against the Philadelphia Eagles, the spotlight turned once again toward Mahomes' legacy.
While many analysts and fans believe he's the only quarterback with a real shot at matching or even suring Brady's unprecedented achievements, Portnoy disagrees entirely.
In an appearance on Shannon Sharpe's Club Shay Shay podcast, the Boston native laid out his reasoning that Brady beat Mahomes every time it truly counted, and that's a stain Mahomes can never wash away.
"No, and it's an easy answer," Portnoy said. "The benefit of them meeting head-to-head in the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay, Brady won. AFC Championship at Kansas City, Brady won.
"If they played, and Brady is at the end of his career, [he] still beat [Mahomes]. Now, he [Mahomes] wins seven [Super Bowls] in a row, different story."
Who wins? Brady vs Mahomes
In just eight NFL seasons, Mahomes has already compiled a resume many Hall of Famers would envy.
With 32,352 ing yards, 245 touchdowns, and just 74 interceptions, he has outperformed Brady's numbers at the same career stage-Brady posted 26,370 yards, 197 touchdowns, and 88 interceptions through his first eight years.
Not only that, Mahomes has already won three Super Bowls and been named MVP twice, earning the reputation of a quarterback who thrives under pressure. However, Portnoy argues that those accolades can't overcome what happened in direct competition with Brady.
To Portnoy, the defining factor isn't just statistical dominance or ring count-it's head-to-head victories in pivotal games.
He emphasized that Brady beat Mahomes in both the AFC Championship Game in 2018 and Super Bowl LV in 2021, with the latter being a blowout that Brady won while nearing retirement.
While Portnoy's stance is clear, it's worth noting that Mahomes' career is still unfolding. He's only 28 years old and has already accomplished what many quarterbacks couldn't dream of in a full career.
Meanwhile, Brady's resume includes 10 Super Bowl appearances, seven victories, five Super Bowl MVPs, and three NFL MVPs.
