Under this scenario, the Raiders are considered one of the "worst" teams that the Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl LIX champions, could face during their season opener at home.
Tom Brady's Raiders instill fear
This was confirmed by Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA TODAY, who analyzed the best potential opponents for the Eagles' home opener, noting that the Raiders have become a team no one wants to face.
"It's wild to think about how much has transpired for these two franchises since they last faced off in October 2021, when Derek Carr went 31-of-34 to nearly set the NFL's single-game completion record en route to a 33-22 win in interim coach Rich Bisaccia's second game after Jon Gruden's resignation," said Middlehurst-Schwartz.
There is a strong possibility that Brady's Raiders could be the Eagles' first opponent in 2025, although it was also noted that there are other unofficial factors that could increase the likelihood of this game being scheduled for Week 1.
Middlehurst-Schwartz himself explained that the Eagles only have eight home games this season, and the league typically avoids scheduling divisional matchups in Week 1. Additionally, the highly anticipated Super Bowl LIX rematch is ruled out for that date, as it will take place at the Kansas City Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium.
With divisional games and the Chiefs matchup ruled out, only four viable options remain for the Eagles' home opener, giving the Raiders roughly a 25% chance of being the inaugural opponent in Philadelphia. However, Middlehurst-Schwartz considers it unlikely that this will be the chosen matchup for Week 1.
"The Silver and Black have plenty of new pieces in place, including coach Pete Carroll, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, and quarterback Geno Smith. But other than first-round running back Ashton Jeanty, they're all recycled entities. The Eagles are unlikely to occupy many 1 p.m. slots on Sundays this season, but this looks like one of the few matchups bound to be shunted to the side," he added.
