This season, the Las Vegas Raiders are presenting a new face. They are now led by the experienced Pete Carroll, who has a long and successful NFL track record with the Seattle Seahawks, whom he put on the competitive map and also led to a Super Bowl win in 2014.
Carroll is the new Head Coach of the Raiders, and his first big decision was to bring in Geno Smith as his new quarterback, someone he already knew from Seattle. Additionally, in the Draft, with their first pick, the team selected Ashton Jeanty, the best running back in the class, who is also being compared to Saquon Barkley.
Not long ago, the Raiders had a quality running back. Just a year ago, during free agency, they let Josh Jacobs go. Jacobs ed the team in 2019 and spent five years there. For a long time, he carried the Raiders' offense on his back - but even so, they let him go.
Josh Jacobs was left hurt by the Raiders
The Alabama product had a strong desire to continue playing with the Raiders and was 100% committed to the team. Jacobs was also involved in the local community, but in the end, the organization chose not to re-sign him, and he had to move on to the Green Bay Packers.
"There comes a point where you just can't keep disrespecting me," Jacobs said on the Bussin' With the Boys podcast. "...You're bringing in new coaches every year, and now these new coaches are telling me I haven't had three 1,000-yard seasons. They're telling me I have to prove myself again like I'm a rookie, treating me like a rookie. They're telling me I have to play in the Hall of Fame Game. Then we start losing, and suddenly they feel like they need me and put me in - and I play well. Then they basically say, 'Yeah, you played well, but we're going to slap the franchise tag on you.'"
During his time with the Raiders, Jacobs had four different head coaches: Jon Gruden, interim coach Rich Bisaccia, Josh McDaniels, and Antonio Pierce.
Jacobs felt that he had earned a long-term contract, especially after leading the league in rushing yards in 2022 with 1,653 yards. Ironically, in 2024, the Raiders were the worst team in of rushing yards per game.
Jacobs also mentioned that at one point, the Raiders offered him $10 million per year, so instead, he chose to sign with the Green Bay Packers, agreeing to a four-year, $48 million contract with the franchise.
