The Los Angeles Rams were trailing the San Francisco 49ers by 10 points with just a few seconds left to play in the Week 2 matchup when head coach Sean McVay decided to call a field goal kick on 2nd & 10 to make the final score 30-23 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
McVay, 37, is now in hot water with the NFL community due to the final play being the most blatant "Vegas phone call" in league history. The field goal was meaningless, except for the fact that it allowed the Rams to cover the 7.5 spread.
For those who don't know how sports betting works, Rams were 7.5 underdogs, so even if they lost, those who bet the spread won because of the field goal make that made it a seven-point loss.
NFL fans are upset because it makes it seem like Vegas oddsmakers are in control of final outcomes, which is illegal.
Covering the spread in a loss is nothing new in sports, but the way in which McVay did it made him look shady, though some thanked him.
Barstool president loves Sean McVay
Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy was among the betters who made a quick buck thanks to McVay's pointless field goal.
"Sean McVay has a seat at my dinner table for the rest of his life for kicking that FG down 10 with 4 seconds left," Portnoy tweeted.
It's unclear if McVay actually knew the field goal would cover the spread, with another theory saying he just wanted to give kicker Brett Maher some practice.
For years, betting on the NFL was illegal, but in 2018, the Supreme Court overturned the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). Still, players and other league staff are not allowed to bet, so McVay might have some questions to answer.
