Why did Derek Carr retire?

Carr entered the NFL in 2014 as a second-round pick by the Oakland Raiders [now Las Vegas] and his market value quickly skyrocketed after a series of strong seasons in his youth.

In 2017, Carr signed a five-year, $125 million extension, one of the richest contract in NFL history. That agreement locked in $40 million in full guarantees and positioned him among the league's highest-paid QBs.

After being released in 2023, he quickly signed a four-year, $150 million contract with the New Orleans Saints, including $100m guaranteed and a $28.5m g bonus.

According to the Saints, Carr's retirement was prompted by complications stemming from a shoulder injury sustained in late 2024. Though surgery was an option, there was no guarantee Carr would return to his previous performance level.

After consulting medical professionals and his family, he opted for retirement and bows out with impressive career stats reading more than 35,000 career ing yards, 217 touchdowns and four Pro Bowl selections.

"In late March, while ramping up his preparation for the 2025 season, Derek experienced pain in his right shoulder," the Saints said. "It was his first time throwing a football at significant volume since recovering from both a concussion and left hand injury sustained during play on December 8, 2024.

"Derek immediately ed the Saints Medical Team. Eventually, medical scans determined objectively that Derek sustained a labral tear and also had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff."

The Saints added: "Surgery was an option, jeopardizing the entire 2025 season, yet there was no guarantee Derek would return to the level of strength, function and performance of play to which he was accustomed.

"Upon consultation with his wife, Heather, Derek has decided it is in the best interests of both his family and the Saints organization to retire from the National Football League."
