Saquon Barkley will not leave the New York Giants as the trade deadline bears down on the NFL, with head coach Brian Daboll confirming the news to the media on Wednesday, October 25.
Barkley is a Pro Bowler and a first-round draft pick but did not sign a long-term contract with the 2011 Super Bowl champions creating rumors that he could be traded away from the MetLife Stadium.
He is also out of contract at the conclusion of the 2023 season for the second successive year, allowing him to become a free agent unless a deal is agreed, despite being given the tag of 'franchise player'.
Daboll quite simply told the media on Wednesday when asked about a potential trade: "That's not happening."
He has had a successful season with Daboll in 2022, recording 1312 yards and 10 touchdowns but he has struggled to maintain that form into 2023 only managing 3.8 yards per carry in four games and suffering an ankle injury. Nevertheless, the news that the 26-year-old won't be traded will be welcomed by him as he doesn't want to leave the group anyway.
Who do the Giants play in Week 8?
The Giants won their Week 7 clash at home against the Washington Commanders, as they emerged 14-7 victors and recorded just their second win of the season by scoring all of their points in the second quarter.
Barkley actually scored the opening touchdown of the game by catching a 32-yard by Tyrod Taylor with 8:56 on the clock, whilst Graham Gano added the extras.
In Week 8, they're at the MetLife once again for an inter-state clash as they face the New York Jets. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 ET start on October 29th.
The Giants bid to improve their record to 3-5 and draw level with third in the NFC East, although they'd need a huge result to leapfrog the Commanders as they're down by 55 points for.
