New York Jets rookie Xavier Gipson scored a touchdown on a punt return to seal the overtime victory for his team in the season opener against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.
The Sunday Night Football contest started with Aaron Rodgers getting injured four plays into his Jets debut, but ended on a high note as Gipson ran two-thirds of the field to score the TD. While his speed suprised many, Randall Cobb predicted the young receiver's success.
On Hard Knocks, which featured the Jets' preseason this year, Cobb can be seen telling Rodgers and anyone who will listen that Gipson is the truth.
Cobb, 33, who is Rodgers' right-hand man, maybe even sidekick, followed the quarterback to New York after playing together for the Green Bay Packers for 13 years.
Rodgers, 39, wanted Cobb in New York with him so that he could help the young receivers earn his trust. Gipson caught both of their eyes and the QB told his young WR to work on consistency.
Jets 'trick' Xavier Gipson into thinking he's cut
Gipson, 22, and Jason Brownlee, his best friend, were two of the wide receivers who stole the show on Hard Knocks, especially after making the 53-man roster.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh was shown telling Gipson he made the team, but not before playing a little trick on him.
Gipson itted he was more than relieved after Saleh changed his facial expression from sad to happy and told him the good news.
More returns like Sunday night's game-winning punt return in OT will surely catapult Gipson from special teams to the offense. Jets visit the Dallas Cowboys next.
