When Aaron Rodgers' torn Achilles injury was confirmed, the New York Jets entered a state of flux. On one hand, they had beaten the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 and there was hope their defense and running game could keep them in contention. After back-to-back losses, fans are now wondering when their next win will even come.
The main culprit has been Zach Wilson, the former 2nd overall pick who has taken over as the starting quarterback for Rodgers. Wilson limited mistakes in Week 1, but proceeded to throw three interceptions against a fierce Dallas Cowboys defense the following week. Then in Week 3, he mustered only 157 ing yards while taking three sacks.
Competition for Zach Wilson?
Head coach Robert Saleh re-stated that Wilson will be the starter moving forward, but it appears the team is open to the possibility of benching him, as they will be g veteran Trevor Siemian on Tuesday.
Can Trevor Siemian provide stability?
Siemian isn't exactly a world beater, but the Jets need someone who can at least move the chains through the air. He spent the 2019 season with the Jets, although he only played a handful of snaps before a serious ankle injury ended his season.
Siemian resurfaced in 2021 for an efficient five-game stretch with the New Orleans Saints before spending last season with the Chicago Bears, where he made one spot start. He spent the preseason with the Cincinnati Bengals this year, but lost out to Jake Browning in the backup quarterback battle and was subsequently released.
At 31 years old, the ceiling for Siemian isn't very high, but it wouldn't be surprising to make some starts if Wilson continues to underwhelm.
Wilson is last among all quarterbacks this season in completion percentage and er rating, despite owning the longest "time to throw". Part of that is Jets receivers not getting consistently open, but Wilson isn't making anything happen.
