The Super Bowl is the highest-rated single-day sporting event in the United States. According to the Nielsen agency, 27 of the 30 highest-rated television broadcasts in history are Super Bowls. Despite this, no US president has ever attended a game while in office, but Donald Trump will change that this year.

It is not unusual to see the newly elected president attending sporting events. In January 2020, during his first term in the White House, Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, attended the College Football National Championship between Clemson and LSU at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Before that, he attended boxing matches, tennis matches, golf tournaments, and World Series baseball games. During his election campaign alone, he was seen at the FIFA Club World Cup draw and at UFC 309, where he had an interesting interaction with Jon Jones. Now, President Trump has his sights set on Super Bowl LIX.

Super Bowl LIX Special: Everything you need to know about Eagles vs Chiefs

Donald Trump and the Super Bowl

According to a report by Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman, President Donald Trump is planning to attend Super Bowl LIX, where the Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles. CNN confirmed the information, adding that he will be accompanied by House Speaker Mike Johnson.

No sitting president has attended the Super Bowl, but three vice presidents have. In 1971, Spiro Agnew made an appearance at the Orange Bowl for Super Bowl V, where the Colts beat the Cowboys 16-13.

In 1982, George H.W. Bush attended Super Bowl XVI to watch the 49ers beat the Bengals 26-21. Most recently, Al Gore attended Super Bowl XXVIII in 1994, where the Cowboys beat the Bills 30-13.

A security nightmare

Each Super Bowl requires a tight security detail, but after the New Year's Day terrorist attack on Bourbon Street, authorities raised the alert level. The operation will involve thousands of federal, state, and local agency personnel to ensure the safety of attendees in and around the Ceasars Superdome.

The eventual visit of President Trump will surely lead to increased security for the event. However, there is still no further information on possible modifications, and it is expected that the details will remain confidential.
