In the wake of the Tennessee Titans' heart-wrenching Week 15 overtime defeat to the Houston Texans, star running back Derrick Henry offered candid reflections on his future with the team. The Titans' 19-16 loss, marking their second straight losing season under coach Mike Vrabel, represents a stark departure from the winning trajectory they've maintained since Henry's debut.

Henry, who has spent his entire NFL career with the Titans, expressed his sentiments following Sunday's game. Speaking with ESPN's Turron Davenport, Henry acknowledged the emotional weight of the moment: "Yeah, definitely today you had that feeling (that it could be the end of my career with the Titans). I had hope of kind of slipping in there (the playoffs), and then being eliminated with three games left. I've been here my whole career. Definitely wanted to go out strong, which that isn't the case...I'll try to give it my all in these last three games and leave it all on the field."

Henry looks to be leaving the Titans for free

The Titans' decision not to trade Henry, despite the fading playoff hopes, was a notable move. However, this choice has potentially set the stage for Henry, a two-time rushing champion and 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year, to exit in 2024 free agency without any returns for the team.

Henry's performance remains stellar as he continues to defy the typical career trajectory of NFL running backs, who often see a decline as they approach 30. With the fifth-highest rushing yards this season (884), Henry's prowess is unquestionable.

Though the Titans' playoff aspirations have dimmed, they still hold the power to impact the postseason landscape. With games against the Seattle Seahawks, Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars, all vying for playoff spots, Tennessee has a chance to shape the 2023 playoff picture. As the Titans navigate this challenging period, Henry's future and the team's direction remain central narratives in the unfolding season.
