The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Tuesday, January 28, that Microsoft would be in talks to buy TikTok, although he stressed that he would like to see a "bidding war" for the app.
However, ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, did not respond directly to the offer, at least not at the moment. The January 19 law required the Chinese company to sell it for national security reasons, and as this has not happened, the app has been blocked in the North American country.
However, Trump also stressed that he was open to Elon Musk, who is part of his government, buying the app, something that has not been heard of again. Moreover, artificial intelligence startup Perplexity also made a proposal this week to merge with TikTok, showing the amount of interest in the app.
When will the sale of TikTok take place?
However, the sale must be closed as soon as possible, in fact, before the month of April, which is the month given by Donald Trump for the situation to be resolved. This is not a concern from the Chinese side, who have assured that they would have no problem in dedicating themselves to the rest of the world.
However, the platform believes the situation will be resolved: "TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the clarity and security needed to our service providers that they will not face sanctions in providing TikTok to more than 170 million Americans."
Trump is more than interested in being able to control the app: "TikTok collects vast amounts of data on tens of millions of Americans. It could surreptitiously manipulate the platform to advance its geopolitical interests and harm the United States, for example, by sowing discord and disinformation during a crisis," he explained at a 2024 conference.
