For many s,2024 has been a year that has left us with many disappointments in of video games. Over the last 12 months we have seen how quite a few studios have taken a tremendous hit, either because of the poor quality of their work or because of expectations.
Today, at MARCA Gaming, we talk about them. In other words, thegames that have hit the hardest, the releases that have least lived up to our expectations, the most notorious failures and/or the worst rated of 2024.
Concord
If we have to highlight a video game in a bad way, Concord is one of the most striking cases. For a variety of reasons, Firewalk Studios' game has become one of the biggest disasters of the year. Its release left Sony in a bad position, mainly because of the very low number of players at launch.
It was so bad that it didn't even make it to 3 weeks. And it's not that it was so, so, so bad, but it made a lot of wrong decisions. For starters, it tried to compete with a F2P like Overwatch with a rather high starting price: 40 euros.
Apart from that, its characters failed to attract too much attention, so it was said to have little charisma. The gameplay did not leave a bad impression, but it was unable to overcome its bad start and ended up closing. It is one of the most exaggerated cases not only of 2024, but of the history of video games in general.
Skull and Bones
Concord and Sony weren't the only ones to have a bad time because of a triple-A. Ubisoft's Skull and Bones was released with more pain than glory after a very long and troubled development. Before its release, it was already clear that the game was not good, and on February 16, 2023, we were able to confirm this.
The problem with Skull and Bones is that it has been unable to live up to expectations after a decade of waiting, being one of the biggest economic flops we in the industry. Unfortunately, 2024 has been the scene of several such cases, and this is just one of many.
If it had been released a few years ago, it is very likely that Skull and Bones would have worked better, but it was out of step with the current generation. In the end, neither its gameplay nor its graphics convinced anyone.
Utopia City
To be honest, I have not had the pleasure (or displeasure) of trying Utopia City, the worst rated game of 2024 on Metacritic. At least if we consider its re-release. It arrived in Europe in 2006, but it has not arrived on Steam until 2024.
And it didn't win by a small margin. Utopia City has an overall rating of 23 points, while the second worst rated, Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat (for mobile devices) has 41 points.
It is a science fiction first-person shooter and in general it has not convinced almost anyone. Developed by Parallax Arts Studio, it shows an outdated graphic section, archaic gameplay and a very low level of staging.
Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection
When I first talked about it, I had mixed feelings. Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection brings together two of the best games in the franchise, but it didn't arrive in good shape. Full of bugs, and with problems on the servers, it did not live up to expectations.
According to my research, it is the worst rated game on Steam with only 22% positive votes. At least in those that have arrived this year, as there are others even worse. In any case, Battlefront is a real shame.
If the port had been done with a little more care and attention, it would be one of the best re-releases of 2024. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened, and it has become one of the biggest disappointments of the year.
MultiVersus
MultiVersus is not a bad game. Far from it. In fact, I find it quite fun, and it has been one of the few that has managed to stand up to Super Smash Bros. At least temporarily. So why is Warner Bros.'s new game here?
That's because it's in free fall. Originally, MultiVersus was released in 2022, but in 2024 its definitive version was published. This came with many changes and improvements, but even with these it has not managed to recover. Its community is very low and that is why it is a disappointment.
It's hard to find a game and there aren't too many incentives to spend our time on it. I would love for this to change in the future, but it seems unlikely. Its good initial reception has turned into pure ostracism and almost no one re it anymore.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
I have to say that I don't quite agree with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. For many it's an absolute disaster, but I liked it. As a single player it is very enjoyable: it has good gameplay, charisma, soundtrack, etc. It's just fun.
However, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League was released as a service game and there it has not met the expectations of either the players or the developers. It has failed to survive as a long-term experience, which is why it makes this list.
If you're looking for a single-player experience, it's fine, and it's entertaining. If what caught your attention was the concept of game as a service, you'd better turn around, since you can't even enjoy this alternative.
