As Wimbledon begins, Novak Djokovic is the leading candidate to take the title, heading into this tournament with the aim of adding his eighth Wimbledon to his list of honors, which would bring him level with the master of the All-England Club, Roger Federer.

He arrives with only one match played on grass, in the Hurlingham exhibition, but he has already won both Grand Slams held this season, the Australian Open and Roland.Garros.

There are also five key challenges for the Serbian to consider over the next two weeks.

Djokovic and his record on grass

Djokovic has a balance of 86 victories for 10 defeats in the British major. That's more than the 85 that the rest of the tennis players in the top 20 of the ATP Ranking have achieved.

Within the top 20 of the circuit, Karen Khachanov is the second with the best figures and, but with only 11 victories he is far from being on the heels of the top grand slam winner.

The Serb's effectiveness is measured by 89.6 percent of matches won at Wimbledon, a far superior figure in contrast to the 56.3 percent of the other 19 in the top 20.

He has been absolutely infallible since 2017 on Wimbledon grass. That season he had to retire due to injury in the quarter-finals against Tomas Berdych.

One step away from being the grass court master

Roger Federer retired with eight Wimbledon titles to his name.

Now, Djokovic has seven and one more would take him to equal the tennis player with more distinctions on the most important grass of the ATP circuit.

Wimbledon is the second tournament in which he has the most crowns, only after the 10 in Australia.

Three times three

Three times has Djokovic won three of the four majors this season. This could be his fourth time, a merit that can only be attributed to him in the men's draw.

The player from Belgrade comes from winning in Australia and Paris and this would be the second time he has won the first three Grand Slams of the year.

This year, he will be aiming to close the season with four majors.

Five consecutive crowns

Bjorn Borg (1976-80) and Roger Federer (2003-07) are the only two Open Era players to have gone unbeaten at five straight Wimbledon tournaments.

Djokovic has never strung together five trophies at the same Grand Slam, however the last four years the title has gone to the Serb, so he could now the select British Grand Slam club of Borg and Federer.

12 majors in his 30s

The 36-year-old has won 11 grand slams since he entered his 30s. Only five players in the history of tennis have been able to lift at least 12 majors under this condition.

His closest rival in the battle for this crown is Rafael Nadal, as he has won eight Grand Slam singles titles after turning 30.
