UFC middleweight contender Sean Strickland, known for his outspoken views, has recently weighed in on the celebrity presence at major sporting events.
His remarks came shortly after the Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois boxing match, which attracted a host of well-known figures.
Strickland takes jab at celebrity privileges at sporting events
The event, held at Wembley Stadium, was packed with celebrities such as Conor McGregor, Tyson Fury, Terence Crawford, and British rock star Liam Gallagher.
Strickland took to social media to express his opinion on the dynamic between die-hard fans and celebrities who secure front-row seats at these events.
In a post on X, Strickland called attention to what he sees as a growing disconnect between the true ers of the sport and those simply attending for appearances.
"There are two parts of sporting events... The fans in the nose bleeds watching the sport, who make the sport. And there are 'famous' people with front row seats that give zero fks about the sport and are just there to party.... Oddest fuing thing,"Strickland wrote.
His comments resonated with many UFC fans, who have long debated the role of celebrity culture in combat sports.
As a fighter who is known for engaging with his audience and speaking candidly about the sport's evolution, Strickland's critique highlights a growing sentiment that celebrities attending high-profile events may sometimes overshadow the dedication of true fans.
This isn't the first time Strickland has stirred conversation around the role of celebrity in sports.
His social media presence is often filled with controversial takes on current events, politics, and the inner workings of the fight world.
Alex Pereira recruits Strickland for fight
As Strickland continues to make headlines outside of the octagon, his career inside the cage is equally noteworthy.
After losing his middleweight title to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 297 earlier this year, Strickland has been vocal about his desire for a rematch.
Despite his request being turned down in favor of a bout between du Plessis and former champion Israel Adesanya, Strickland bounced back with a hard-fought split decision victory over Paulo Costa at UFC 302, putting him back in title contention.
In an interesting twist, Strickland is now set to assist UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira in preparing for his next title defense at UFC 307.
Pereira, who knocked Strickland out in 2022, has since formed a training partnership with the outspoken fighter.
As Pereira gets ready to face Khalil Rountree in Salt Lake City this October, Strickland will lend his experience to help the Brazilian champion acclimate to the high altitude.
