Conor McGregor has once again made headlines, this time by confirming his desire to fight in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) and win a world title. Speaking at a press conference in Florence, Italy, ahead of BKFC's April 26 event, the former UFC champion made it clear that he has serious ambitions in the brutal sport.
"If you think I'm up here giving these speeches and leading these men into battle and I won't step in there myself, think again," McGregor said. "For sure, Conor McGregor will fight in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. Mark my words."
McGregor's BKFC ambitions face UFC contract hurdles
While McGregor's enthusiasm for BKFC is undeniable, his immediate future remains tied to the UFC. The Irish superstar still has two fights left on his UFC contract, and it seems unlikely that Dana White or the promotion's executives would allow him to leave early.
McGregor has not competed since his devastating leg injury against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. Although he has since returned to training, his comeback has faced setbacks, including a broken toe that forced him to withdraw from a scheduled June 2024 fight against Michael Chandler.
Despite speculation about his return to the octagon later this year, the UFC has yet to confirm when McGregor will complete his contractual obligations. Until then, his BKFC ambitions remain on hold.
A new challenge in bare-knuckle fighting
McGregor sees BKFC as a prestigious and legitimate challenge, emphasizing the respect that comes with holding a world title in the promotion.
"I'd like a world title in this company. I would wish to be the bare-knuckle world champion. That is a significant belt to hold in your career," McGregor stated. "Nobody from boxing to mixed martial arts can speak nothing bad about a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship world champion."
McGregor's desire to enter the bare-knuckle arena has sparked debate within the combat sports community. Known for his striking skills, many believe his style could translate well to BKFC. However, the physical toll of bare-knuckle fighting is undeniable, and it remains to be seen if McGregor will follow through on his latest declaration.
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether 'The Notorious' steps into the BKFC ring-or if his UFC journey continues a little longer.
