- UFC. Tom Aspinall reveals Dana White's green light for Jon Jones showdown
- UFC. Jon Jones wants to be the best paid: $30 million to fight Aspinall?
The departure of Francis Ngannou left a power vacuum in the UFC heavyweight category. Jon Jones is the current champion, but there has been much speculation about his legitimacy since he has not yet faced the best in the division, starting with Tom Aspinall. However, Joe Rogan has no doubts about it.
Jones won the heavyweight belt after beating Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023. Since then, "Bones" has defended the title on 12 occasions, marking a record for defenses in the category. His most recent defense was a technical knockout over veteran Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, in a fight rescheduled for last November.
Aspinall, meanwhile, was interim champion after Jones was injured before the original date of his fight against Miocic. Since then, fans and pundits have fervently debated who the true champion of the division is. Most lean towards the Englishman, but Rogan has a different take on the debate.
Rogan has not stopped ing his boy
In a recent conversation with Brendan Schaub, Rogan made it clear that his faith is still in Jones. When Schaub opined that Aspinall is the best heavyweight in the world, the commentator immediately jumped in, saying, "Who knows? [Maybe] Jon beats him. Jon might beat him up."
Rogan went further by saying, "He could take him down and f*cking ragdoll him on the ground." The veteran analyst turned one of Aspinall's greatest strengths into a weakness by saying, "We also don't know what happens to Tom Aspinall in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds."
The commentator stressed, "We have zero idea. No one's gotten there, no one's even gotten close." Aspinall has the shortest fight time in the UFC, at just 2:02 minutes per fight, which is why Rogan speculates that if the fight goes beyond the second round-something that is very likely, it could be to Jones' advantage.
Jones could be Aspinall's Nemesis
Although anything could happen if these two collide in the octagon, most analysts agree that Jones will extend the fight beyond the third bell. If he does, it would put Aspinall in uncharted territory and tip the balance in Bones' favor.
All of this remains in the realm of speculation. However, all doubts could be cleared up this year if negotiations to reunite these two titans on the canvas come to fruition. In the meantime, everyone has their opinion, and Rogan will defend his tooth and nail.
