Anti-doping controls have been part of boxing since the 1980s. They have evolved over the years to address various issues, but still have a long way to go. Corruption, lack of unified regulations, use of masking agents and the sheer cost of testing, as well as the influence of various promoters and stakeholders, have always made anti-doping testing quite complicated.
That's why the accusation made by Tevin Farmer after his fight against Mexican William 'Camaron' Zepeda on Saturday at The Venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is quite shocking.
Tevin Farmer accuses lack of impartial anti-doping control
Farmer stole the spotlight from the fight by questioning on social media the lack of random drug testing beforehand.
Why weren't Zepeda and I drug tested? I asked several times in the locker room before our fight
He also claimed that he never understood why there was no drug testing. He also revealed that the promoters told him there would be testing after the fight, which never happened.
Farmer clarified that he is not looking for excuses for his defeat, but is asking questions that he believes deserve attention. With this debacle, Farmer lost the WBC interim lightweight title to Zepeda.
William Zepeda challenges Shakur Stevenson
William Zepeda defeated Tevin Farmer by split decision last Saturday, making him the mandatory challenger to Stevenson, who holds the original WBC belt. The Mexican says he is ready to accept the fight and told DAZN that he is waiting for the offer.
We are confidently waiting to receive that offer, that firm offer for the opportunity, and we will obviously take that opportunity. Since I have been in this position, I have mentioned that we have been waiting for the opportunity.
Zepeda suffered a fourth-round knockdown against Farmer, but came back strongly to win a very close fight. The victory over Farmer, a former junior lightweight, means that the Mexican boxer has three wins this year, perhaps the three most important of his career.
