Hello everybody and welcome along to this Sunday's Formula 1 live blog, which will bring you all the latest updates from the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen is in pole position and looking to continue his dominance of the sport, aiming for a fourth consecutive victory.

He'll be starting alongside Fernando Alonso, after Nico Hulkenberg was handed a three-placed grid penalty, while Lewis Hamilton is in third.

That means there are three multiple-time world champions right at the front, so it should be a thrilling contest when the lights go out at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS!!!!!!

A smooth sailing Grand Prix for the Dutchmen, he equals Senna on wins and takes Red Bull's 100th F1 win! Alonso takes second after a great battle with Hamilton throughout the race. Hamilton take a consecutive podium of the year!!

Switcheroo for 9th!

It's a hot battle for 9th, Norris gets ed Bottas. He's now got to build a big gap to remain in the points

Alonso reopens the gap to Hamilton after being told he was closing in

Mercedes tell Hamilton, Alonso is nursing a rear break issue. He's getting closer and closer to 2nd place

Norris trying to get further into the points

He's under threat of dropping out the points due to the penalty. So he's trying his best to get past Bottas. But there's a DRS train forming behind Albion

Hamilton is incoming!

He's been the fastest man on track for a while but Hamilton has got the gap down to under two seconds. May be hard for Alonso to fight this one as he's being told to "lift and coast"

Russell retires

After a great drive, Russell is told he has to retire the car, as his breaks aren't safe. Gutting for the British driver after a great comeback drive

Despite the crash into the wall, the Mercedes is comfortably within DRS of Alex Albon here as he aiming to take 7th place

Medium tyres looking like the best

Hamilton takes the fastest lap of the race! He's still 3 seconds behind Alonso but he's going for it here to take back 2nd place

Hamilton causes ripple on podium!

Alonso has come in now for a new set of hard tyres. Followed by Verstappen a lap later, who also takes on the medium tyres, like Hamilton

Hamilton pits!

The 7 time world champion is in the pits in aim to do the undercut on one of the other podium sitters. He enters on the track on mediums but still in 3rd!

Norris gets a penalty

The McLaren driver is handed a 10 second time penalty by the steward for "unsportsmanlike-behavior" seemingly for backing the back up during the safety car so McLaren could do a double stack.

Now Perez and the Ferrari's are starting to pit, as all three have been running long all race

Russell back in points

Despite tumbling down to 18th Russell is back into the points places! Could he stay in it? He's got the pace too

Magnussen and De Vries off the track

The Haas and the Alpha Tauri have taken each other down the slip road on turn one as they fought for 18th Place. They both have to reverse to get back into the race

Albon going for points!

Albon finally gets past Magnussen to get into P11, he's got Piastri in front of him now, so the Williams driver is hoping to get some points for the team today!

Verstappen complaining

The race leader is complaining about his tyres but just as he sets one of his fastest laps of the Grand Prix

Both Ferraris are still out in 4th and 5th, still and unknown when the two will come into the pits

Brilliant Scrap for 2nd

The two oldest drivers on the field are fighting like the best. Alonso gets ed Hamilton but they're still battling away for 2nd it's like 2007 all over again

Lap 20

Heating up in the midfield

It's heating up in the battle for 9th. Lando Norris is right on the back of Magnussen. He gets past him on the straight, with a great move. He's not that far from Bottas now, the McLaren is on the hunt!

Clean start for everyone

No chops or changes to the restart. Verstappen, Hamilton and Alonso all hold on to their places

Safety Car coming in

The leader and the two current podium sitters all came into the pits during this safety car period. They swapped their mediums for hard tyres

Russell is back on track!

Somehow Mercedes and Russell have managed to get their car back on to track despite the damage. He's all the way down in P19, but he's not going to be lapped, still a long way back for the British driver

Ferrari's don't pit

The two Ferrari's have come up the pack into p4 and p5, as they don't come into the pit during the safety car

Safety Car!

Russell has hit the wall breaking his front wing and wheel rim in the process! The safety car is out due to the debris on the track.

Many drivers have been complaining of temperature of the tyres. Gasly comes into the pits to ditch the hard tyres

Verstappen's lead has opened up. But Russell is now closing in on Alonso, as he attempts to Hamilton

Sergeant Out!

The Williams driver is given the message over the radio to stop the car. It's now a virtual safety car

Despite a big hit against the wall Alonso is closing in on Hamilton. He's now within DRS, he could get him at the next straight

Magnussen close call!

We're now seeing replays of what a close call it was for Magnussen as he battled. Could have seen him out of the race, but he resumed

Mercedes on the charge!

Hamilton gets past Alonso on the start. But Verstappen keeps the lead! Russell is also on Alonso's tail trying to get 3rd

This Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix will start at 20:00 ET, the local time in Montreal and also on the USA's east coast. That works out at a 19:00 BST start for those in the UK, or a 20:00 CEST start for those in western Europe.

Looking at the full starting grid, Nico Hulkenberg has been given a three-place grid penalty and won't, therefore, start in second despite an impressive qualifying.
