Manchester United's European season is over after they lost 3-0 to Sevilla at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan condemning them to a 5-2 aggregate loss in the Europa League quarter-final.

Erik ten Hag's team had done virtually enough to move into the semi-final when they had a 2-0 lead in the final 10 minutes of the first-leg, but a collapse at Old Trafford set the stage for another disaster in Spain.

Harry Maguire was forced into the heart of Manchester United's defense due to the injury suffered by Lisandro Martinez a week ago, and less than nine minutes into the game he was involved in pure chaos.

David de Gea played a poor to the English defender, with Sevilla engaging in a routine press, yet Maguire then tried to play a difficult round the corner to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and he surrendered possession.

Youssef En-Nesyri converted the subsequent chance, handing Sevilla the advantage.

Sevilla controlled the rest of the match from there, they were never in any modicum of danger.

It could, and should, have been 2-0 just before the half-time break when Lucas Ocampos fired in a sumptuous strike from the edge of the penalty area, however an offside in the build-up gave United a reprieve.

Sevilla didn't have to work hard for their goals

One of the worrying themes from the tie was the fact that Manchester United gifted three goals to Sevilla.

The hosts didn't have to work hard to get ahead once Lisandro Martinez suffered his injury.

Within minutes of the restart, it was 2-0 as Loic Bade mistimed a header, connecting with the ball with his shoulder, yet somehow lobbing the ball over David de Gea and into the net courtesy of the crossbar.

The contest was over from there and Sevilla were able to rub salt into the wounds of their English opposition as En-Nesyri got a second.

A clearance was headed towards De Gea, who completed his nightmare return to Spain by failing to control the ball, merely knocking it into the path of the Moroccan who finished from range.

Sevilla will now face Juventus in the semi-final of the Europa League.
