Shakira's North American tour has hit a major bump in the road, as the pop icon has now been forced to cancel back-to-back shows due to production complications.
Just one day after her Boston concert was abruptly scrapped, the singer's May 31 performance in Washington, D.C. - which was set to double as WorldPride DC 2025's Welcome Concert - has also been called off.
In a statement released on May 30, Nationals Park, the scheduled venue, revealed that complications from the Boston cancellation have made it impossible to get the full tour setup to D.C. in time.
"Shakira's full tour production cannot be transported to Washington, D.C. in time for her scheduled performance," the venue said. "As a result, the D.C. show has been canceled. Despite every effort to make it happen, it is not possible to move forward as planned."
Fans who purchased tickets via Ticketmaster or the Nationals website will automatically receive refunds. Attendees who used secondary platforms are advised to the original seller.
Tour disruption rooted in Boston venue safety issues
The root of the issue dates back to Shakira's canceled concert in Boston, originally set to take place at Fenway Park.
On May 30, Live Nation disclosed that a routine inspection of the venue uncovered structural concerns that rendered it unsafe for performances.
"Structural elements were identified as not being up to standard, so the shows were canceled. All team are safe," the promoter said in a statement to USA TODAY.
The fallout from the Boston cancellation appears to have disrupted the transport and assembly of Shakira's extensive tour production, forcing the cancellation of the Washington, D.C. stop as well.
Other artists, including Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn, have also been affected by the Fenway Park issues.
Shakira addressed the D.C. cancellation in a heartfelt message shared with fans: "Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am sad and heartbroken that I will not be able to be in Washington, D.C. with you tomorrow.
"I hope that I can come back to D.C., as soon as I am able. Meanwhile, please know that I am eternally thankful for your unconditional ."
Despite the back-to-back cancellations, the singer is expected to resume her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour on June 2 in Atlanta, assuming no further logistical complications arise.
The tour began in South America in February before kicking off its North American leg on May 13. It marks one of the most ambitious undertakings of Shakira's career.
In a recent interview with USA TODAY, she said: "I've worked so much on every detail of this show. I'm building the biggest setlist of my career...
"I've created original music for the transitions in the show, new choreography and arrangements. I have 13 costume changes... I feel like this is a recap of that journey."
With more than 145 crew traveling with her, Shakira's tour is a massive production - one that now faces renewed scrutiny after a turbulent start in the U.S. Fans remain hopeful that future dates will proceed without further disruption.
