The Indian side said the attack was in response to acts perpetrated just two weeks ago in the section of Kashmir under its control, where 26 tourists were killed after a group of gunmen opened fire. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already warned that he would pursue the culprits and they would receive "a punishment that will sur anything they can imagine".

Pakistan's response has been swift. The Indian army claims that artillery attacks have taken place in Jammu and Kashmir with "arbitrary and indiscriminate firing and shelling across the Line of Control". Earlier, Pakistan had shot down five Indian aircraft and a combat drone.

The conflict has led several airlines to cancel all flights operating in the area. According to FlightRadar24, 52 flights to or from Pakistan have already been cancelled.
