Jim McIngvale, better known as Mattress Mack, shared a video via social media on Saturday explaining why the Houston Astros decided to cancel his opening pitch minutes before the start of their Game 1 Divisional Round clash against the Minnesota Twins at Minute Maid Park.
Mack, 72, has become a viral sensation in the MLB community over the past couple of years due to his massive bets on Houston sports teams. A league sponsor that competes in the mattress business, however, is edging him out.
The Astros reportedly approached Mack on Thursday to offer him a chance to once again throw out the opening pitch. Right before the game, the franchise called to cancel his appearance due to Mattress Firm, an official sponsor of the MLB, asking to not fo business with the competition.
"(The Astros) called two days ago saying, 'You want to throw out the first pitch at Minute Maid Park?'" Mack said. "I said 'Well of course (it would be ) quite an honor.' I threw out the fisrt pitch for Game 6 last year against the Phillies. Even better, yesterday Reggie Jackson, who's a consultant to the Astros and Mr. October, a great friend of mine called me and said I'm going to need to get there early and warm up so I wouldn't bounce the ball and embarrass myself, and I said, 'Good idea, Reggie.'
"I got a call from the Astros a couple of minutes ago saying that Mattress Firm is a national sponsor of Major League Baseball, which is fine good for them, and they said that they weren't going to let me throw out the first pitch."
Mattress Mack sends message to Mattress Firm
Mack continued the video by sending a message to Mattress Firm, saying there's enough business for both furniture stores, so canceling his appearance is a sign of weakness.
"My message to Mattress Firm is there's plenty of business out there for all of us," Mack said. "What we need to do is promote better sleep not snipe at our competitors. I'm sure that my endless advertising has sold lots of mattresses for Mattress Firm and all I gotta say is let's all be better than that and Go 'Stros."
Mack also alleged that Mattress Firm forced him out of being a judge in a Houston-based police K-9 competition.
Despite the Astros wasting Mack's time and making him look like a fool, he still showed his for the Houston team, which is once again looking to reach the World Series.
