Julio Urias' return to the mound will have to wait longer, at least in Mexican baseball, as he will remain behind closed doors and is ruled out to be part of the Mexico team in the next edition of the World Baseball Classic.
The president of the National Teams Selection Committee, Horacio de la Vega, confirmed in a press conference that they will follow the same line as the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol and respect the 36-month suspension imposed by the federal authorities of the United States.
"Unfortunately for him, he has not complied with the characteristics of the sanctions he has had and properly the crimes typified by the competent authority in the United States has demarcated, after a process of these 36 months that do not comply just to occur until the part of the World Classic," said Horacio de la Vega at the press conference.
Julio Urias will not be considered by Mexico
According to Horacio de la Vega, the position of Mexican baseball on Julio Urias is firm, both in the national team and in the summer league, since the priority is to respect international sanctions until his legal process with the competent authorities in the United States is completed.
"Julio is in the same situation that I have already explained above regarding the Mexican League," De la Vega said. "Unfortunately, having not yet complied with the legal sanction imposed by the competent authority in the United States, he cannot be considered for selection. His process concludes until 2027, and until that happens, we are not going to make any determination in this regard."
The Mexican pitcher has a probation sentence, but has received an update from MLB after being placed on istrative leave and, despite not having an official suspension, team owners cannot take him into , as the 2023 video of the domestic violence incident with his partner aggravated his situation.
Urias has an official MLB suspension until the 2025 All-Star break. In theory, he will be eligible to return on July 17 and sign with any team from that date, although team owners could ignore him, as has happened with Trevor Bauer.
