Matt Bush, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 MLB Draft, is once again in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
The 38-year-old pitcher was arrested Friday night in Arlington, Texas, after a series of events that began with erratic driving and ended with a multi-car accident.
Matt Bush attempted to flee from authorities
According to reports from the Arlington Police Department, officers attempted to stop Bush's 2023 Lincoln Aviator around 8:25 PM after observing him driving recklessly.
When authorities approached, Bush sped away, managing to evade them for a short time.
Just minutes later, at approximately 8:30 PM, he ran a red light and caused a major collision at an intersection, hitting a 2023 Chevy Silverado before crashing into two other vehicles.
Witnesses claim Bush exited his vehicle and attempted to flee the scene on foot.
However, bystanders intervened, holding him until police arrived.
He was then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, where officers noted signs of intoxication.
Despite this, Bush refused to speak with investigators or submit to sobriety tests.
The former Texas Rangers pitcher was subsequently arrested and charged with three offenses: driving while intoxicated, evading arrest, and accident involving injury.
Matt Bush has a long history of legal troubles
Since being drafted in 2004, his off-field behavior has derailed what was once a promising career.
Just weeks after being selected by the San Diego Padres, he was arrested for a series of offenses, including felony assault.
His rap sheet grew longer over the years, with incidents involving drunken assaults, violent outbursts, and multiple DUIs.
One of the most serious incidents occurred in 2012, when Bush was arrested for driving under the influence and causing an accident that left a 72-year-old motorcyclist seriously injured.
He was sentenced to 51 months in prison and spent the 2012 MLB season behind bars.
Despite his troubled past, Bush managed a remarkable comeback, debuting in the major leagues with the Texas Rangers in 2016.
His return to the mound was hailed as a redemption story, but recurring injuries, including multiple Tommy John surgeries, have kept him from sustaining a consistent presence in the league.
After a brief stint with the Milwaukee Brewers, Bush returned to the Rangers in 2023 as part of their World Series-winning roster, though he didn't play in any games during the championship run.
Now a free agent at age 38, this latest arrest could mark the final chapter in Bush's turbulent career.
