Pat McAfee didn't hold back on his podcast when slamming Ohio State's head coach Ryan Day for his massive contract extension. Despite leading the Buckeyes to a National Championship, Day's new $87.5 million, seven-year deal has sparked controversy-especially in light of the coaching turmoil the team is facing.

McAfee, ed by former Buckeye AJ Hawk, sarcastically congratulated Day but criticized Ohio State's financial priorities. "Riddle me this," McAfee quipped. "Couldn't find an extra million for Jim Knowles, but we can find $12.5 million for Ryan Day."

His remarks pointed to the departure of defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who left for Penn State after Ohio State seemingly chose not to match Penn State's $3.1 million annual offer.

McAfee's frustration didn't end there, as he also questioned the promotion of wide receivers coach Brian Hartline to offensive coordinator, a role he has never filled before.

Knowles was just the beginning

Ohio State's coaching staff has been hit hard by a mass exodus. Knowles' departure was just the beginning. Offensive line coach Justin Frye left for the Arizona Cardinals, reportedly also interviewing with the Chicago Bears.

Meanwhile, Chip Kelly ed Pete Carroll's staff with the Las Vegas Raiders after just one season with the Buckeyes. The team now faces the challenge of replacing these key figures while preparing for the season.

Hawk attempted to temper McAfee's criticism, suggesting that Ohio State may have avoided exceeding a $3 million cap for coordinators. However, McAfee remained firm, emphasizing the chaos in Columbus. The Buckeyes may be celebrating their recent championship, but their coaching staff appears to be in turmoil.

Day is worth paying the price

Despite the backlash, Day has proven his worth, steering the Buckeyes from the brink of despair to a national title. Moreover, the coach demonstrated his commitment to the community by donating $1 million from his new deal to mental health programs at Ohio State's Medical Center.

For all the controversy, Day remains focused on building both a championship program and a stronger, healthier community. Whether McAfee's critiques will hold weight or fade away remains to be seen as the Buckeyes navigate these turbulent times.
