As per the University of Colorado, Sanders will get a yearly base salary of $10 million - making him the highest-paid football coach in the Big 12. The deal was struck despite Sanders having three years remaining on his five year, $29.5 million deal he signed when ing from Jackson State.

When looking at the new contract overall, it is a five-year deal worth $54 million.

Sanders has turned Colorado around

Sanders has proven to be a winner, turning around two programs in the NCAA. While serving as head coach of Jackson State from 2020 to 2022 he amassed a record of 27-6 and appeared in two bowl games.

His work at Jackson State helped him earn the job with Colorado. After finishing with a 4-8 record in his first season with the Buffaloes in 2023, Sanders led the team to a 9-4 record last season which saw them finish tied in the Big 12 conference.

Although the Buffaloes made the 2024 Alamo Bowl, they ended up losing the game. Nevertheless, two of the Buffaloes biggest stars - Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, Deion's son - are expected to be top picks at the NFL Draft.

Sanders' new deal with Colorado puts an end to rumours linking him with a move to the NFL. He was mentioned as a possible candidate in the recent NFL coaching cycle and even landed a meeting with the Dallas Cowboys.

In the end the Cowboys opted to promote Brian Schottenheimer instead.
