The 2025 NFL Draft came and went, wrapping up on Saturday with some high-profile names being called much later than expected. The biggest of those was obviously Shedeur Sanders, who was considered a potential Top 5-10 pick for almost the entire pre-draft process. Sanders ended up sliding to the 5th round. But perhaps equally surprising was Quinn Ewers' fall from grace being completed.

Following a great 2023 season with the Texas Longhorns, Ewers was considered a potential first overall pick in 2025 if he were to follow it up with an impressive 2024 season. Instead, he watched as fans called for Arch Manning to start over him. Ewers didn't help himself with his play, but he was clearly under a ton of pressure. Despite the poor 2024 season, Ewers decided to enter the NFL Draft instead of going to another school.

Quinn Ewers might have been better off transferring to another school for one season

Ewers' own performance in the 2024 season, along with Manning practically usurping him as soon as the year ended, set in motion the events that led to him being picked near the end of the draft on Saturday. It took until pick 231 for Ewers to hear his name called.

Ewers was never expected to go very high. Despite coming into a weak quarterback class, Ewers was still considered a Day 2 or possibly Day 3 pick. But he likely didn't imagine falling all the way to the 7th round. What was more surprising were the quarterbacks drafted ahead of him: 13 signal-callers went before Ewers.

Some of those quarterbacks weren't even as productive as Ewers in college, playing against competition that was worse. That goes to show what the NFL truly thinks of Ewers' potential. Ewers had the opportunity to transfer to another school for one more season and improve his draft stock. He must have seen the mediocre QB class and thought he could take advantage, but he clearly miscalculated.
