The New York Giants may have found their quarterback of the future in Jaxson Dart as the rookie out of Ole Miss, selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, beats the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen on the SPS ranking.
The youngster continues to generate buzz after achieving a perfect 100 on the Star-Predictor Score, becoming the first quarterback to ever reach that mark and underscoring the hype around him.
It was more than just a viral moment as Dart's unprecedented score and performance suggest he may be on track to becoming the team's franchise quarterback, finally offering them the replacement they've chased since Eli Manning retired in 2019.
But what is the SPS? According to Anthony Rivardo on X (formerly Twitter), the SPS is "a test that simulates the potential score of players, trying to predict their success when entering the NFL."
While the specific mechanics of the metric remain complex and largely proprietary, its historical accuracy in identifying elite-level quarterback talent is noteworthy and its reputation speaks for itself.
For example, previous top scores include Lamar Jackson at 99.2, Jalen Hurts at 99, Patrick Mahomes at 96.2, and Josh Allen at 92.9. All of them are MVPs save for Hurts, who is a Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles anyway.
The fact that Dart scored higher than all of them, including Mahomes, is a remarkable endorsement of his projected potential and he backed that projection up with real world results too.
Giants reporter Art Stapleton noted that Dart went 6-of-11 in a wind-affected outdoor session, with two incompletions stemming from clear defensive interference no-calls and another from a dropped .
"A lot to like from Dart so far," Stapleton added of the performance, days after he delivered an 8-of-10 indoor session marred by two more drops to show it's not just the computer talking.
Can Jaxson Dart rescue the Giants?
For fans, the excitement around Dart is understandable as the Giants are coming off another underwhelming year at quarterback, with Daniel Jones dropped before the 2024/25 NFL season even ended.
The team had to cycle through Tim Boyle, Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock so the 22-year-old's arrival brings a fresh sense of hope and energy to a franchise desperate for a stable leader under center.
However, he might have to wait to get the nod. New York also brought in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to bolster their ranks, and it's likely Dart will be second chair behind the ex-Seattle Seahawk.
For the Ole Miss Rebels he produced 4729 ing yards for 29 touchdowns and allowed just six interceptions, achieving a 68.3% completion rate in the NCAA. He also added three rushing touchdowns and 495 rushing yards too.
