Apple is on the verge of a major breakthrough in its operating systems. Almost two decades after the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, the versions of iOS have been increasing consecutively until the current one, iOS 18. However, according to Bloomberg, the multinational technology company will go further, leaving aside the sequential numbering of its device systems, jumping directly to iOS 26
Why Apple will switch to iOS 26
This change by Apple is a purely strategic decision with the intention of unifying all its systems under the same logic, since, from now on, the versions of the operating systems will be in accordance with their year of release, as other companies in the sector such as Android or Windows do.
In this way, at the WWDC 2025, which will take place on June 9, Apple will present not only iOS 26, but also macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 and iPadOS 26. With this, Apple tries to provide the with a clearer and more coherent experience, in addition to easily facilitating which version is from each year: "The goal is for the entire ecosystem to speak the same language and for the numbering to reflect an integrated view of the platforms," they say.
Beyond this, Apple also wants to strengthen the connection and cohesion between its devices and with a tool that is in our daily lives and that revolutionizes today's technology: Artificial Intelligence, as the company will bring to the scene improvements made with generative AI.
With these changes, Apple wants to simplify, modernize and unify its ecosystem with a new nomenclature, marking a before and after in its history in the face of a new stage in which artificial intelligence is the protagonist.
