The US Open is underway and Naomi Osaka has stolen the show, at least in the fashion sense.
The Japanese player has debuted a "very cutesy" green Nike outfit, featuring a ruffly green skirt with a white bow at the back.
Many jumped to the conclusion that anime would be the inspiration behind the look, but Nike collaborator Yoon Ahn was behind the outfit, and she has lifted the lid on the design.
Korea-born Ahn is behind the brand AMBUSH, linking up with Nike to design Osaka's eye-catching and feminine outfit.
Osaka told the New York Times when asked about what outfit she wanted for the Open: "I think that when I put on my U.S. Open outfit, I'm going to feel a transformation."
As for the designer, Ahn, she explained to Essentially Sport of the design: "For Naomi's look, she brought forward a vision and it was my job as a designer to create something that she'll feel confident and comfortable in when she walks onto the court, allowing her to bring 100% of herself."
A "girls' world" response
Amid the Japanese movement, Goth Lolita, which largely covers up the bodies of women while requiring a hair net for their locks, Ahn wanted her designs to have a girly touch.
She added: "We live in a girls' world...The collection is an extension of that idea, allowing women to bring out their character and enhance their own personal styles."
