Although it may be true that Power Slap is a spectacle that many watch simply because it's morbid, Dana White decides to keep doubling down on it because it's a business for him. The UFC is right now one of the most popular sports in the world, it took Dana decades to transform it and turn it into a billion dollar business. Amid the recent success of the new sport he is leading in the United States, Dana White was asked how far he believes Power Slap can get. White hasn't been able to respond to criticism against the UFC for the evident CTE problems that the constant head trauma causes to all the participants. But every time Dana White is asked, he just tells people to not watch the sport.
Asked by MMA Junkie about the success of the sport, Dana White said: "Some of you were there and heard me in the early days, I said this will be the biggest sport in the world. This will be bigger than the UFC. Nobody leaves a UFC live event and goes, 'Yeah I don't ever wanna see one of these again.' That's the same thing with the Power Slap, it continues to grow. This was our eighth event. We've only done eight events, and look at the success of this thing in just eight shows. And now, we will get better every time we do it. The athletes will get better. There will be people that come that continue to draw and people wanna see slap. It's all just a huge work in progress, it will just get better every time we do it."
Dana White might be right about Power Slap, but...
Dana White has been making strides in the Power Slap world by getting some big names for the competition. Just last Friday, former UFC Paige Van Zant won her first competition and she didn't even seem to break a sweat. She is seen getting the slaps and absolutely dominating her opponents, many didn't imagine Paige Van Zant would lend herself to do this but presumably her payday was much bigger than other contenders. She has the clout and the popularity to make the tournament grow. Dana might be right, the morbid Power Slap tournament may grow even bigger than the UFC but it will never be a sport. Sorry, Dana!
